Studio Highlight: In Motion from Collage to Painting

The painting Yellow Flash is part of a group of large oil paintings that began when I made collages on my train commute along the Hudson River to NYC. Collaging from a small box on my lap, I cut and positioned shapes and colors in response to the forms of the speeding-by landscape– the motion of mountains, visible river currents, flowing clouds, sky shapes, and shadows juxtaposed across topography. I was interested in how each day a new spatial perception was to be had in connection to myself and the landscape.
"In Motion from Collage to Painting" compares paintings to the collages, visitors are welcome by appointment. In addition, my paintings using collage are currently in the group exhibition presented by Beacon Open Studios, Winter Show at 4 Hanna Lane.
Studio shot: Yellow Flash, oil painting, with Yellow Flash, the companion collage.
